Coach Matt gets Duncan and me to the rink in time to see some of the game between the Fernie Ghostriders (the second-place team in pool A) and the Trail Rebels (the second-place team in pool B). The playoff structure is simple. Whoever wins this game gets the bronze medal, and whoever wins our game gets the gold.

Watching them play, I start to get nervous. Both teams are taking lots of shots and both goalies are kicking them aside like it’s nothing. There’s no way I can play like that. Especially now that I’ve changed my wish.

As my teammates trickle into the arena, we head to the dressing room. I’ve gotten pretty good at putting on the goalie equipment. But my fingers are so sore from biting my nails that I can’t strap on my leg pads.

“You okay?” Duncan asks.

I want to ask him if he thinks it’s strange that I’m getting all these shutouts. Whether anyone else on the team has mentioned my unbelievable luck. A small part of me even wants to tell him about my bobblehead wishes.

I don’t get a chance to do either. Before I can say anything, Kali bursts into the dressing room. “I’ve got insider information!”

Jerry-Horn turns down the music. “Spill it, Kali. What do you know?”

I force the straps through the buckle of my leg pad. As curious as I am to know what Kali’s talking about, I can’t stop to listen. Everyone’s ready to hit the ice but me.

Kali drops down onto the bench between Seven and Mouse. “Do you guys know Jaswinder Sandhu?”

“Sure, I know Jas,” says Charlie. “Goalie for the Wildcats, right?”

The word goalie catches my attention for a second. Then I start thinking about the Wildcats—the only all-girls team in our league—and wondering why Kali doesn’t play for them instead of us. She’s one of our best players, and I’d hate to lose her, but if I were Kali, I’d definitely want to get away from this bunch of smelly, trash-talking boys.

Fartsby must have read my mind. “Hey, Kali, why don’t you play for the Wildcats?” he asks.

Kali gives Charlie a look that tells me she really wishes she could. “Mom and Dad don’t want Charlie and me on different teams.”

“Too much driving?” guesses Gray. “My folks are always complaining about the driving.”

Kali tosses her thick braid over her shoulder. “Too much hockey. Period.”

Whoa. Is it possible my parents aren’t the only ones who think hockey is a waste of time?

“If I could play on the Wildcats, I would,” says Charlie.

This earns Charlie a laugh from everyone but Kali. I chuckle along with my teammates. I’m feeling a bit more relaxed now as I secure my last buckle and pull out my granola bar.

“Shut it!” Kali jumps to her feet. “I need to tell you what Jas told me about the Bruins. Grand Forks has this new kid. Cane Johnson.”

The dressing room goes quiet. She’s got everyone’s attention now. We know we can beat the Bruins. But there’s no denying they’re good.
